Australia's Queensland faces 'biblical' flood

State Treasurer Andrew Fraser said that on top of recovery costs, the state would receive less income because of damage to the mining sector.

Flood waters are continuing to encroach on Rockhampton, a city of 77,000.

The floods have affected about 200,000 people, and many have been evacuated.

An estimated 22 towns have been left isolated or inundated by the rising waters over an area larger than France and Germany.
'Huge cost'

There are concerns that damage could cost billions of Australian dollars to repair.

QUEENSLAND

* North-eastern Australian state
* Largely tropical climate
* Area: 1.73 million sq km (668,000 sq mile)
* Coastal regions, including Great Barrier Reef, designated World Heritage Site
* Mining and cattle ranching important inland

Mr Fraser has had to delay a fiscal and economic review in order to account for the costs of the floods.

"In many ways, it is a disaster of biblical proportions," he told journalists in the flood-hit town of Bundaberg.

"The cost to the state will be huge - both in direct costs such as rebuilding roads, and other damaged infrastructure and providing relief payments to families - but also in lost income, while the mining, agriculture and tourism sectors recover," he said.

"Royalty forecasts are likely to be hit with freight lines cut and reports that many mines may not reach full production again for two to three months."

In some areas the waters have been receding, but around Rockhampton they are still rising.

Rockhampton Mayor Brad Carter said about 40% of the city could be affected when the Fitzroy River reaches its expected peak next week.

"We know we have prepared as best we can - most people who are expecting water to inundate their houses have evacuated," he said.

He said others who needed to evacuate would be advised to leave their homes, and those who refused could be forced to leave.

Among the areas already hit by the flooding are Emerald - a town of some 11,000 people - and two smaller towns, Theodore and Condamine, which have been completely evacuated.

New Jersey GOP Governor Chris Christie: I don't regret going to Disney World during snowstorm

While New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg stayed home and took a media lashing for the slow response to December's devastating snowstorm, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie got some sun.

And he's not sorry. At all.

The Republican governor called the criticism of his family trip to Disney World during the week of a crippling blizzard "carping and
craziness."

"I made a promise to my children that at the end of my first year of governor that I was going to take them to Disney World," Christie said at a press conference on Friday.

"My first and most important responsibility, in my view, is as a husband and a father, and I think I made that pretty clear to the people of New Jersey when I was running [for New Jersey governor]," he added.

When the storm hit Christie's Lieutenant Governor Kim Guadagno was in Mexico with her sick father, leaving Senate President Stephen Sweeney -- a Democrat -- in charge.

Christie left for vacation on Sunday -- the same day Sweeney declared a state of emergency in New Jersey -- with his wife and four children. He returned on Friday.

The governor called the allegations that he "abandoned" the state partisan politics, and insisted that he was in constant contact with state officials during the storm.

Christie said because he flew on a commercial plane, it probably would have been impossible for him to return to the Garden State earlier. He added his flight on Friday morning was delayed, the Star-Ledger reported.

"I wouldn't change the decision even if I could do it right now," said Christie, whose name has been floated as a possible 2012 presidential contender. "I had a great five days with my children. I promised that."

Pork And Sauerkraut Slow Cooker

Pork And Sauerkraut Slow Cooker, Pork and sauerkraut always finds its way onto my table on New Year because it is a great addition to the feast College Bowl games. It is time to leave the slow cooker. Recipes pork and sauerkraut slow cooker can be found on the net.

I do not think there is any food in this world that was more for each other that pork and sauerkraut. Although I do not really believe in the myth that pork and sauerkraut bring good luck, I do not know who gave him a good diet and that is all that is important, especially on New Years Day Game Day.

Sauerkraut is German for “sour grass” or “sour cabbage.” Sauerkraut is finely shredded cabbage that has been fermented by various lactic acid bacteria, including Leuconostoc, Lactobacillus, and Pediococcus.

He has a long life and a sour flavor, both resulting from the lactic acid that forms when the bacteria ferment the sugars in the cabbage. It is therefore not to be confused with coleslaw, which receives its acidic taste from vinegar.

The sour taste is the reason why the pork and sauerkraut are such a wonderful combination. Nothing like putting all this in a big bun with mustard and other condiments that you can love and of course have a cold beer in hand watching as the College Bowl Games. Man Life is beautiful

New Year's Celebration: 3,000 Fireworks Are Expected To Light Up Tumon's Sky

The Tradition of having fireworks at Ypao Beach to ring in the new year has been going on for decades. This New Year's Eve fireworks show is funded by donations from members and business that make up the Guam Hotel and Restaurant Association. In previous years, G.H.R.A. would offer two fireworks shows at two different locations. Besides Ypao Beach, the other location would either be at Agana or at East Agana Bay where the other hotels are at. But this year the Association will only offer one show.

Torre says, "This year we were able to fund raise enough to have one show at Governor Flores Memorial Beach Park, which is also known as Ypao Beach Park. Usually there's another showing where the Sheraton is ay because they do a private showing there, as well as Leo Palace."

For Years, Fireworks Production Incorporated , a company from Maryland, has been working with a local family to produce Fireworks Shows throughout the island.

Torre says, "It's the Salas family. When Mr. Salas past away a few years ago, this company had a relationship with the family and already agreed to come in and continue to take on the project, year to year with all the organizations that put together the fireworks, including the Government of Guam as well as the military.

If you are a fireworks buff, This years show to bring in 2011 will last between 18 to 20 minutes and will have about 3000 shells. Torre says they want to have a high impact and high volume in a short amount of time. So where would be the best vantage point to see the night sky light up with showers of brilliant colors and hear the loud thunderous explosions during this pyrotechnic celebration.

According to Torre, What is great about Tumon is that Tumon can be viewed from within the Tamuning Tumon area, but also from Barrigada Heights and sometimes Sinajana, depending on where you live and how high you are.

But there is one place you will not be able to view the fireworks show, that will be Ypao Beach Park. Torre says in order to secure the fireworks and for safety reasons, Ypao Beach Park will be closed from now until January 1st at 8am. She says the Guam Fire Department and a private security company will be on hand to protect people from harms way and to secure the beach.
